Backyard IT
Why Mize Houser?

Does your company have a System i (AS/400, iSeries) as part of your information technology solution?  Are you aware there’s someone in your own backyard with ideas and expertise you might find helpful?

Mize Houser & Company installed one of the first AS/400’s in Kansas in 1988.  Through all the iterations of that powerful system, we have provided hundreds of companies with application development, web applications, system integration, disaster recovery and hosting solutions.

.

Today a number of compelling reasons keep demand strong for our services –

1.  In tough economic times, moving to a new application/platform is an expensive, risky decision. Companies are hesitant to move to new systems when there are so many unknowns.  The costs they’ve always considered – hardware, software, conversion, training and the considerable investment in staff time – remain.  In addition, many companies are unsure of the future and are simply making no investments at this time.  An alternative is to maximize your use of your existing applications and platform – that’s where we come in.  If you have applications on the IBM AS/400, iSeries or System i, let’s talk.

2.  Many companies have custom applications in place that are the backbone of their business and competitive edge.  Starting over is simply not a (viable) option. The answer?  Make the most of what you have.  Let’s talk about the strengths of your system and where it needs improvement.  Together we can prioritize the most beneficial improvements and make them happen.

3. The new graphical solutions are what end-users want, but see #2 above! What to do?  Let’s work together to identify the screens your end-users access the most and make these screens graphical.  This approach works and provides the greatest payback potential for your investment.  Plus, it allows you to retain your powerful legacy systems.  And remember – end-users may be internal or external.  Your customers and suppliers will find it much easier to do business with you if you’re available on the web – we can help with that, too.

4. Finding capable support staff becomes harder every year. Whether you’re looking for developers, administrators or operators, good people are hard to find – and the schools aren’t preparing students for our environment.  Our developers design systems and write code.  Exposure to scores of systems over their careers provides insight to each new engagement.  And if you’re looking for operators, you might consider getting rid of the responsibility of supporting your own computer – which means you wouldn’t need operators!  That’s just one benefit of our hosting service.  It’s worth considering.

5. Annual hardware and software maintenance fees (and everything else) are more expensive every year.  Instead of “feeding the monster”, take a look at our Hosting Solution. Our clients tell us they can budget their IT costs and not worry about (unpleasant) surprises. Most also admit they didn’t make the investments to their own systems to make them run as fast as ours does – plus they now have a (real/tested) disaster recovery plan. It’s worth considering.

6. Companies need to have their systems available 24x7. This impacts staffing, daily operations, and avoiding all forms of “down time”.  With our Hosted Solution, we are there for you 24x7.  It’s worth considering.

7. An effective Disaster Recovery Plan is critical – and difficult – to implement. What is the risk to your company if your system is down?  To some companies, it’s inconvenient – to others, it’s catastrophic!  Would your risk be reduced if your environment included redundant servers, dual uninterruptable power supplies, a generator, dual power feeds, off-site backup storage and a hot site?  With our Hosted Solution, it will.
